Investigations of contaminated or potentially contaminated soil and groundwater begin with an identification of the type and extent of contamination. The scope of investigations, depend on the objective, type and the location of the contaminant site. The investigations may serve different purposes depending on whether the aim is to remediate a contamination posing a threat to the groundwater, to secure the residents of a new residential complex or to serve as a basis for estimating the costs of managing surplus soil from construction.
There can be significant costs associated with the management of surplus soil from construction projects. Geo ensures an environmentally sustainable and cost-effective management of surplus soil.
Geo coordinates the collection of representative soil samples for chemical analysis in order to generate soil excavation plans. Furthermore, Geo assists in soil related projects from beginning to end, regarding activities such as contact with the authorities and soil treatment plant, notification of soil relocation, project management, and environmental supervision during excavation, and reporting to the authorities.
Geo conducts risk assessments in order to clarify whether contaminated soil is hazardous to health, if contaminated water poses a threat to important groundwater resources, or if vapour from contamination, pose a health risk.
Risk assessments are often required prior to the authorisation of a construction project in order to decide whether a contamination requires remediation. Geo bases risk assessments on relevant Danish guidelines on risk assessment and the JAGG model (Danish EPA model for risk assessment of soil and groundwater contamination), which Geo has created in collaboration with the Danish Environmental Protection Agency.

Contamination may be remediated in numerous ways. Indoor environments are secured by removing and excavating the contaminated soil or performing groundwater remediation. Constructional precautions might also be sufficient, such as ventilating drains or membranes. A superficial soil contamination can be removed by excavating it, or it can be contained in order to prevent spreading and direct human contact.
Geo offers all types of remediation. The choice of method depends on specific assessments carried out during the investigation phase. The method of remediation depends on the type and location of the contamination, the geology and hydrogeology surrounding the source, as well as the phase of the contamination and the timeframe for remediation etc.
Due to the Industrial emissions directive (IED), some companies must perform a basis condition report. The report is performed, either in connection with an environmental approval, start-ups of new companies, or when a current company’s environmental approval is reconsidered.
A basis condition report is an assessment of a company’s production plant, supplemented with a technical soil and groundwater contamination investigation. The intent is to be able to compare the condition of contamination when an activity is terminated, to the condition at the time of set-up.
A basis condition report should be sufficient to prevent a company from being held accountable for a contamination already present at start-up.

In relation to purchasing and selling a property (industrial-/residential property) Geo can assist with an assessment of the environmental and technical risks connected with a transaction; known as an EDD investigation. An EDD covers a thorough technical investigation of the property, where environmental and technical risks are identified. Through the preparation of an EDD, Geo performs a valuation of present environmental and technical conditions as well as identifying responsibilities connected with the acquisition.
The investigations are typically divided into two phases. During phase 1, we perform a systematic review of relevant material regarding an industrial-/residential property is, combined with a site inspection. During phase 2, we carry out a specific investigation of the soil-, groundwater- and geotechnical conditions. The EDD process may also concern occupational health and safety.
In relation to plans of construction or land use change on a contaminated site, Geo is capable of outlining potential costs of remediation.
